Artistic Bike Rack Installation
#2
The next artistic bike rack, "the Harlequin," was
installed on February 11th at McGuffey Park. Read the following
statement by the artist and see the pictures below.
"The Harlequin:
A trickster and a court jester is moving into McGuffey Park.
The Harlequin is always running somewhere, playful yet deceitful
with an eternal smile, as he provides parking for and keeps
a watchful eye over bicycles.
The Harlequin is crafted out of an armature of welded steel
and styrofoam, covered with layers of fiberglass and cement.
The glass tiles add a festive flair to the piece.
My goal with creating an artistic bike rack was to make a fun
yet beautiful piece of art that encompassed movement and functionality."
NiNi Baeckstrom is a sculptor and art teacher working out of
the McGuffey Art Center. She works with a variety of materials
in her quest to explore human and organic relationships and
expressions.
Artistic Bike Rack Installation #1
Art
has the power to encourage us all to enjoy our city by bicycle.
Last year, Art-in-Place and ACCT evaluated proposals from artists
to build creative and fun bicycle racks to be placed in central
locations in the City of Charlottesville. From this Artistic
Bike Rack Design Competition, four bike racks by four local
artists were selected to be installed in the city. The first
bike racks were installed in Washington Park on January 14th.
The artist for these first racks is Bill Hess and the name of
the racks is "Tree Cyclists Waiting for Bikes." Below are two
pictures of the bike racks prior to installation and two pictures
right after installation in Washington Park. The racks were
painted, as a donation, by the B&W Auto Body Shop. Come
out and see these fun, attractive, useful bicycle racks!
Articles
on the racks by the
Hook, and the
Charlottesville Newsplex.

The
remaining bike racks are as follows:
- "Wheel
Racks" by Clay Hill Forge, to be installed at the Downtown
Library
- "Bicycle
in Cloud" by Bob Batz, to be installed at Jackson Via School
More
information regarding these installations, and pictures of the
bike racks, will be added to this webpage as they become available.
Please check in with us again soon!
Supporting
local artists: The selected bike racks were purchased
from the artists for $1000 each. Additionally, a plaque will
be installed on the ground next to each rack with the name of
the bike rack and the artist. The plaques will also direct people
to this web page.
